Site News (10-29-2008) – Searching

Posted by: Kenneth Rougeau    in Store News, Website News

I thought I was going to get to spend some time today catching up on everything, but instead ended up fighting the Search function on our website all day long. I’ve known for awhile now that the built in Search function wouldn’t catalog our product pages – why I don’t know, that’s just the way it works… The people who created our nifty Shopping Cart system have a Search add-on that I could buy, but it would only appear on the Product Pages & so I don’t think anyone would ever even see or notice it, lol.  Sooo… I spent the day trying out different WordPress Search plugins – fun fun fun, let me tell you. *sigh*

I finally came across one that sounded like it would do exactly what I needed – Search Unleashed, which says it will index every page/post on your WordPress site… Well, in short, they lied.

Out of the box, I was able to search our blog posts and any standard pages, but it wasn’t searching beyond the first product page so only 15 or 20 collage sheets were being indexed. I couldn’t live with that – we’ve got almost 500 collage sheets and we plan to triple that number in short order! Sooo… back to the drawing board I went and, after a whole lot of trial and error, teeth gnashing, and some fun with tourettes, I came up with a solution that now has 80% of our products searchable – try it out! The Search box should be in the upper right corner of the website.

Currently, there are a few categories which were too large on their own to index properly, meaning that I’ll need to break them all into subcategories before you’ll be able to find them with the Search box. The categories that are missing currently are: Fantasy & Science Fiction, Text & Ephemera, People, and Catch of the Day issues. If you’re looking for collage sheets in these categories, please use the Product Categories menu on the right.

I’ll be working on getting the rest of the items into the Search function ASAP & will post an update as soon as I know for sure that they’re working properly.

Thanks for your patience!
