If… Dennis Hopper’s Art & Photography

   Posted by: Kenneth Rougeau    in Art & Artists, Art History, Painting, Photography

No other persona better signifies the lost idealism of the 1960s than that of Dennis Hopper“, said film critic Matthew Hays. The actor was best known for his numerous film & filmmaking credits, but he was also enamored with the world of art & poetry, himself an avid & talented photographer, painter, poet and sculptor.

Dennis Hopper‘s impressive film career began with his film debut in the 1955 movie Rebel Without A Cause, starring James Dean, of whom Hopper was an immense fan. Hopper also appeared in the 1956 James Dean film, Giant. The death of James Dean following a tragic automobile accident had a profound impact on the young Hopper, who became distraught & difficult to work with & who is reported to have refused direction for over 80 takes during several days while shooting From Hell To Texas.

Ostracized by film studios across Hollywood because of his reputation for being “difficult,” Dennis Hopper turned to photography. He became quite prolific, creating cover art for Ike & Tina Turner, and taking several photos of “people of interest” – musicians, actors, poets, and artists that Hopper thought had the potential to become successful. Noted writer Terry Southern profiled Hopper in Better Homes and Gardens as an up & coming photographer “to watch” in the mid 1960′s.

Dennis Hopper encountered a plethora of amazing talents, among them some of the most influential artists of the 20th century, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Salvador Dali. Hopper is included among the Andy Warhol‘s famous Screen Tests, a series of silent films created by the artist between 1964 and 1966.

Dennis Hopper, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March of 2010, has also received the rank of commander in France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) for his contributions to the arts. He was an avid art collector, as well as an artist, and purchased an original of one of Andy Warhol‘s Campbell’s Soup Cans for $75.00. Hopper recently curated an art show in Taos, New Mexico at the Harwood Museum. Selections included artwork by artists Larry Bell, Ken Price, Ronald Davis, Ron Cooper, and Dean Stockwell.

This article can’t begin to give you more than the vaguest of glimpses into what can only be described as an extraordinary life. Dennis Hopper was an intense and complicated individual, impassioned & intelligent. His death is a tragic loss for the art world & the entire world. Hopper passed away on the morning of May 29th, 2010 having recently celebrated his 74th birthday. He had been battling cancer since the fall of 2009.

Namaste, Mr. Hopper.

‘If’
by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”;

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man my son!

PaperStreet’s Catch of the Day Returns!

   Posted by: Kenneth Rougeau    in Catch of the Day, Collage Sheets

PaperStreet’sBest of” collection, The Catch of the Day, returns with Volume VIII this April, 2010. The Catch of the Day began as a daily subscription newsletter packed with information and tutorials for artists and crafters, as well as a daily digital collage sheet containing some of our favorite images handpicked from our extensive collection of source materials. Each collage sheet features numerous images such as vintage photographs, postage stamps, old advertisements, postcards, posters, labels, drawings, illustrations, paintings, and more. PaperStreet’s Catch of the Day is crafted by artists for artists – these are the same images we use to make our own artwork & so we strive for the utmost in quality content.

Catch of the Day - Volume VIII, Issue 1Catch of the Day - Volume VIII, Issue 1

We are not currently offering Catch of the Day subscriptions, but expect to make them available again soon. For now, each new sheet will be posted daily to the appropriate shop category (Catch of the Day – Volume VIII) and will be available at the regular downloadable collage sheet rates ($3 for JPG, $3.50 for PDF). Catch of the Day back issues are also being made available for download & will also soon be available on CD-ROM and DVD. I’ll have updates posted as things progress.

Volume VIII, Issue 1 was announced and due to be released April 1st, 2010. Unfortunately, I was caught late at an art show and wasn’t able to get the sheet up in the shop on time… My old subscribers I’m sure are giggling at this, they’re quite used to my “artist’s” sense of timing – I’m almost always running behind, hehehe. To make up for my inadvertant April Fool’s prank, I added an additional collage sheet to the issue, meaning that Volume VIII, Issue 1 is a double issue – two awesome digital collage sheets for the price of one. I hope you enjoy them! I loaded them up with some of my favorite new pics collected over the last 6 months or so, many of which I’ve used or plan to use myself.

Catch of the Day - Volume VIII, Issue 2

Volume VIII, Issue 2 was released late in the day on April 2nd 2010 & is now available for immediate download in our store. Issue 2 comes loaded with even more great source material including an amazing color illustration of Baron Munchausen, an awesome colorized vintage photograph of a Japanese gentleman in a bowler hat, a black and white photo of two sisters, a Pony Express postage stamp, a postmark from Belgium, an old postcard, several illustrations, and more. This issue & all other digital collage sheets we carry are available as your choice of downloadable, printable JPEG or PDF files.

And now… *drumroll* — The Catch of the Day, Volume VIII, issue 3, released just this very minute April 3rd, 2010. Today’s digital collage sheet was crafted by accomplished collage artist Charlotte Self & contains several source images she thinks no collage artist should be without including a diagram of a suit of armor, vintage portraits, a fairy illustration, a dragonfly, blue bird, bird’s egg, flowers, and a lovely blue butterfly.

Catch of the Day - Volume VIII, Issue 3

Volume VIII, Volume 4 is currently under construction & promises to be fantastic! :) I look forward to sharing it with you tomorrow afternoon. In the interim, I’ll be adding more downloadable content to our shop today including our Vintage Ladies & Comic Book image collections, as well as more Catch of the Day back-issues. If you’re having any difficulties locating something, or have any concerns, comments or criticisms, please send a message to support@paperstreetsupplies.com and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Have a great time!
