Fingerprint: The Art of Using Hand-Made Elements in Graphic Design
Fingerprint:
The Art of Using Hand-Made Elements in Graphic Design

Design is at a turning point. Our infatuation with (and the backlash against) technology is over. Today’s best designers have learned to embrace its advantages and think beyond its limitations by combining the power of the computer with the tactile qualities of handmade elements. Inside you’ll find examples of work that showcase a variety of design methods, including mixed media, illustration, letterpress, screenprinting and collage. You’ll find inspiration in examples from outstanding designers and see how traditional elements can make a more powerful statement than anesthesized computer-only work. Fingerprint also includes insightful essays on the power of the handmade by Debbie Millman, Jean Orlebeke, Jim Sherraden, Martin Venezky and Ross Macdonald.

“Even when I was younger, I would sit and cut things out, making sure that I was precise and exact; to have none of the background showing at all. Give me a pair of small detail scissors and an image and, I can sit for hours cutting. Some people may say I need therapy but, I guess this is my therapy – the world is blocked out and the mind switches modes. My mind is constantly going – I am both analytical and creative so, when one half of my brain is not working, the other half is in full gear. And then, they switch. I am always looking at how to make things better, how to use things differently and how to look at things with a different perspective. I have books filled with ideas but, unfortunately, have little time to execute them all. I always have to have a notebook with me because I never know when a sight or an image or a saying will spark an idea. I have been known to scribble sketches and notes down on napkins, paper coasters and paper menus – whatever is around at the time.” – sheldonandpenrose

My name is Liz and I’m a mostly self-taught Canadian artist who has been painting, drawing and making something out of nothing since I was a young child in the late 60’s (oh alright,I’m 43!). My mother was a painter and I guess her love of art and dragging me around to art galleries somehow rubbed off on me and became my destiny! I work in different mediums (mostly acrylics) and my style can be simple, fun and whimsical to very intricate and realistic. Painting is what I love doing best, but I got into doing collages since the art class in 4th grade got me hooked! Somehow cutting heads off people and piecing them back together is very therapuetic for me.Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a little better!” – BlueGypsy
