Animation Director by day & paper puppet magic rabbit fish at night.
“Some things in life are slick, polished and blatantly obvious. But for Crankbunny, these are exactly the things she shies away from. Instead, she’s more inclined to explore timeless concepts like subtly, curiosity, texture and awkwardness. Her hand-drawn and animated creations are often described as dark, sometimes noir and always magical.”

CotD Delayed

Posted by: Kenneth Rougeau    in Catch of the Day, Store News

If it’s not one thing, it’s another it seems. Not only are we sniffling, sneezing, and all that other great NyQuil ad nonsense, but now we’re having trouble with our outgoing newsletter mailserver as well. According to my software, there’s an error… not a specific error mind you, just “an error”… Great. Fine. Called GoDaddy tech support (wow, someone answered & didn’t sound like an idiot – thanks Carlos!)… According to them, I’ve sent over 200 messages so far today… Hmmm… That would be about right if all of the attempts my software were making had actually gone through, but I know they didn’t go through or else we’d all have copies of yesterdays newsletter, right? I don’t have one, Charlotte doesn’t have one, and I’m assuming that none of you do either. Now, if I find out later that I’ve accidentally sent each of you 30 copies, you’re welcome to come by, line up, and slap me across the face with the fish of your choice… I’m going to try and rebuild the entire mailing list from scratch in case it’s a database problem, but to be honest I’m not sure how that could be or otherwise what the problem might be. If the software is sending them as far as GoDaddy, then the software’s solid IMHO. If GoDaddy is actually receiving and SENDING the messages, as they say is the case, then THEY’RE solid IMHO. So what the hell is going on?! That remains to be seen. Stay tuned, dear reader, ’cause if I’m anything it’s tenacious & I will ferret the problem out. I’ll also be extending all subscriptions by 2 days – hope that helps make it up to you!

Thanks for your patience,
- Ken

Update: Alright, we should be back on track! Everyone who’s supposed to have them _should_ now have Volume III, Issue 30 & Volume IV, Issue 1. If you missed either, please let me know! Today’s issue is under construction and should be out this afternoon. Thank you for your patience!

Brian Dettmer:
Book Sculptor
Book sculpture by Brian Dettmer

Brian Dettmer’s carved books are intricate creations which seek both to seduce the eye and provoke the mind. Through the cut open cover of a book the viewer sees layers of specifically selected text and illustration carved from the pages of the book. Through the gaps in an architectural drawing or perhaps the chambers of the human heart, one can see a word peeking through, perhaps a clue to the larger meanings of the piece. These pieces seek to bridge the gap between a medium’s form and its message. Dettmer manages to use the contrasting layers of image and text to explore the conveyance of information, as well as being able to get the viewer to examine what that can mean.

"My grandmother, "Mama", instilled a love of God and of creativity in me from an early age. She told me to "use my imagination" and was always supportive in anything I ever tried to do. Over the years I have worked in various mediums, trying one thing after another, because I love the challenge and the processes." – RedLadyArts

For those of you who didn’t already know, I cut my teeth artistically by creating a series of 18 images as illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland. I’m currently in the midst of creating a new series for the sequel, Through The Looking Glass (the first three prints are out now).
