Hanson certainly enjoys his work, and the collages are infused with the artist’s delightful sense of mirth & merriment. “It’s all about being able to play as an adult, it truly is. In fact, I never really remember being interested in art as a kid, at all. I don’t remember ever doing this kind of stuff. It was only as an adult that, you know, I met somebody else along the way several years ago that thought that this was fun, and once I started doing it I thought, ‘Yeah, this is fun. This is great stuff!’

I feel like my job is all about exaggeration.” “I would not be a good minimalist kind of artist ’cause I just can’t operate that way.

When I first started doing this, I didn’t sell a thing, didn’t give anything away, didn’t sell a thing. I kept it. I mean, I liked it. I really like my stuff, so it was kind of an awakening that first time that I setup on Albert Street and had my table out there. I thought, ‘Aw, I’m gonna lose some of this stuff.’ I mean, ‘I’m never gonna have it again.’ Then I realized, once people bought it, and once I realized it was going up on peoples walls and they were gonna be looking at it and kind of celebrating this piece like I did, then it took on kind of a different dimension, kind of a different picture.

Steve B. Smith has created a wild assortment of engaging, ecclectic, oft “out there” & “off-kilter” collages and assemblages. His website, agentofchaos.com, houses pages upon pages of artwork, all evidence of Smith’s various “art crimes”. Smith’s site was described by Tisha Nemeth as “literary outrageousness, entertaining criticism,” an “art slide show, plus 900 pages of collage, mixed media, photography, guest artists and everything your mother warned you about.”
