Nikolas Tantsoukes:
The Wicked Uncle
The Wicked Uncle (You Won`t Laugh No More) - handcut papercollage by Nikolas Tantsoukes (http://nikolastantsoukes.com)

Nikolas Tantsoukes speaks of his works as PaperCollages. In the first step of creation he selects “objets trouvés” in newspapers and magazines, photo- and art books, advertisings and flyers. These are then arranged and glued together to form his pictures – a process that can often take several months. Fragments of this fabricated reality then form a new milieu, one that is unique to each piece of art. In doing this Nikolas Tantsoukes follows the principles of photo collages, as developed by George Grosz and John Heartfield around the end of World War one. The subjects of Nikolas Tantsoukes‘ works are widespread, and range from deconstructed portraits to visions of dream sequences, which also show some resemblance, at times, to the collage-books of Max Ernst.

Brian Dettmer:
Book Sculptor
Book sculpture by Brian Dettmer

Brian Dettmer’s carved books are intricate creations which seek both to seduce the eye and provoke the mind. Through the cut open cover of a book the viewer sees layers of specifically selected text and illustration carved from the pages of the book. Through the gaps in an architectural drawing or perhaps the chambers of the human heart, one can see a word peeking through, perhaps a clue to the larger meanings of the piece. These pieces seek to bridge the gap between a medium’s form and its message. Dettmer manages to use the contrasting layers of image and text to explore the conveyance of information, as well as being able to get the viewer to examine what that can mean.

Raoul Hausmann:
A B C D

Raoul Hausmann was a founding member of Berlin Dada, and one of its driving forces. He was inexhaustible in his artistic pursuits and liked to try his hand at everything. He was a photomonteur, painter, fashion designer, poet, pamphleteer, publisher, and partner of Hannah Höch. Everything he did was done with enthusiasm and an often angry gallows humour.
